Bad Boys
If I was to make a list of my top five favorite action movies, I’m almost positive Bad Boys would be on it, although as funny as the exchanges are between Martin Lawrence and Will Smith, I’m not sure I wouldn’t classify this movie as a comedy. This movie spawned a sequel for good reason, even if the sequel was a mere echo of the original film’s greatness. Any young person looking to build their DVD collection should feel confident in adding Bad Boys.
Generally, I’m not a Martin Lawrence fan. The humor in his movies borders on pure slapstick, while my personal preference is more for wit and subtlety. In this movie, however, director Michael Bay found a way to bring Lawrence’s funny side out without letting it overpower the amazing chemistry between the actors in this film.
As for Will Smith, this movie marked the beginning of his ascent as a summer blockbuster king, and for good reason. He is vibrant, thrilling, and sexy on screen. In Bad Boys, he manages to be a true ladies’ man and a hardcore man’s man at the same time.
Tea Leoni completes the dream team in her first major role on the silver screen. The sexual tension between her and Smith smolders below the surface at all times (and who wouldn’t be attracted to Will Smith in this role?!), and her scathing wit at the expense of Lawrence is downright hilarious.
Pair the amazing collaboration of these three actors with an ensemble cast including Joe Pantoliano, Theresa Randle and Nestor Serrano, and you’ve got the recipe for a box office smash that later films have tried and failed to recreate. And Tchéky Karyo as a terrific, yet terrible villain is the perfect foil for the hilarity of this movie.
