Because I Said So
Entertaining romantic-comedy
For Mother’s Day, my siblings and I decided to buy our mother the newly released DVD, Because I Said So, starring Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore. We thought this movie would be a good choice because the movie studio could have substituted my mother into the movie and it would have turned out exactly the same. Okay, my mom isn’t nearly as bad as Keaton’s character, Daphne, is in the film, but at times, it was pretty close. Nonetheless, Daphne’s over-the-top antics, combined with several different love stories, make for an enjoyable movie-watching experience.
In the beginning of the movie, you are introduced to the Wilder family, which consists of the mother, Daphne, and her daughters, Maggie (Lauren Graham), Mae (Piper Perabo), and Milly (Moore). Maggie and Mae are already married, which allows Daphne to dedicate all of her energy into finding Milly the perfect man. But to do this, Daphne decides to put up a personal ad on an internet website which caters to mothers trying to find mates for their daughters. Thus begins the struggle between choosing the man that the mother picks out, Jason (Tom Everett Scott), and the man that Milly is truly in love with, Johnny (Gabriel Macht).
Along the way, Keaton displays her physical comedy prowess on a number of occasions, including having a cake smashed into her face.
Moore shows that she has transitioned from a singer-turned-actor into a legitimate actor. Milly was a very complex character, but Moore proved that she was up to the challenge, making Milly a character for whom you both rooted and felt sympathy.
Overall, I thought the movie was very entertaining. The DVD also has several bonus features, including a behind the scenes look at the making of the movie, as well as an in depth look at the fashion and wardrobe. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who thinks that their mother is too involved in their lives, because Keaton will shatter that thought in a second.
