Return to Me
It's like a sweet dessert that keeps you satisfied the whole day.
Return to Me (starring Minnie Driver, David Duchovny, Bonnie Hunt and others) is one of the favorites among my romantic-comedies. Not because it’s the most finely crafted film I’ve ever seen, it suffers symptoms common for first-time directors (like Bonnie Hunt), and not because the story is terribly original, a man loses his wife in a car accident and falls in love with the woman who receives her heart in a transplant. It’s one of my favorites because it leaves you thoroughly satisfied at its finish, giving an example of how love, people, and melt-in-your-mouth rom-coms should be.
One reason is David Duchovny. He’s a relative newcomer to the rom-com genre, playing stoic brooders in the sci-fis (“X-Files”), or dead-pan men in comedies (Zoolander). He is, however, surprisingly adept at the romantic lead. I feel heartbreak for his loss and swoon when he dates Driver’s character with the naivety of a love-struck teenager.
Another is Minnie Driver. Driver is admittedly one of my favorite actresses. No matter the genre, she manages to inject humor and charm into her character. She’s just as naïve as Duchovny and together, they create a convincing interpretation of “first love”, “true love”, and “new love”. Despite their past circumstances, they’re completely wide-eyed at the possibility of being together—refreshing in a world where most are disillusioned by love.
And the auxiliary cast leaves nothing wanting. Comprised of veterans like Carrol O’Connor, David Alan Grier, Robert Loggia and James Belushi, they turn a fairly run-of-the-mill script into an enjoyable experience.
This film has a sweetness and lightness to it that stays with you for the remainder of the day. Add it to your collection and watch it whenever you need a mood boost.
