Rocky Horror Picture Show

Where to begin? Let’s start with aliens, transvestites, tissue reanimation, floor show, cannibalism, and lots of grown men wearing corsets and lingerie. Piqued your interest yet? How about Susan Serandon singing about how she just wants to be dirty? Or, Tim Curry proclaiming he’s just a sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania? It was a cultural phenomenon when it debuted, and more than 25 years later, it’s still a big hit.

This movie came out of left field and became the definition for a cult-movie sub-culture. Entire audiences worth of people dress in drag or lingerie, throw rice during the wedding scene, squirt water during the storm, hold up newspapers to fend off the water, and watch actors cast to act out the on-screen drama in front of the screen. There’s no real explanation to "Rocky Horror’s" success. It is a random case of movie mob mentality.

Janet and Brad have just attended their mutual friends’ wedding when Brad pops the question to “Dammit, Janet.” They decide to take a road trip to see the man who inspired their romance-–a science professor named Dr. Scott. A criminologist takes over the narration from there, occasionally provides helpful charts and maps, and shakes his stuff when it comes down to it. Complication? The couple gets a flat tire on the way, and picks the wrong house at which to inquire for help.

Dr. Frankenfurter is a flamboyant bisexual scientist who creates an ‘Atlas’ called Rocky to play with in bed and out. He manages to draw both Brad and Janet into his sexual games. More complications? Dr. Frankenfurter’s original experiment breaks free from the freezer, and turns out to be Dr. Scott’s troublemaker nephew.

It’s psychotic. Yet tons of actors (who are actually worth their salt) signed on, sets were built, camera and editing crews hired, and "Rocky Horror" still manages to play on the big screen during Halloween. It makes no sense, but it’s addicting. The songs stick with you, and it is very satisfying to see Susan Serandon, Barry Bostwick, Tim Curry and Meatloaf in this cult horror farce.
