American Pie

Such a classic

"American Pie," starring Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Eddie Kaye Thomas and Seann William Scott didn’t invent the “teen gross-out flick”, but it certainly contributed some memorable scenes and spawned an entire trilogy. (The straight-to-video additions to this franchise are so sub-par they don’t warrant association with the original trilogy.)

This movie’s monster success was partially due to its sex appeal. Shannon Elizabeth appeared in Playboy before the film. Biggs jokes in "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back" that he has yet to live down his famous apple pie masturbation scene. “MILF”, “pale ale”, and “one time, at band camp” stories have become mainstays in teen rhetoric all because this movie’s sexual content was so memorable.

And why was it memorable? Because it was so relatable. The male stars represent types in American high schools everywhere. Although their actions were exaggerated for comedic effect and shock value I have no doubt the real people these characters resemble have even wilder stories. After seeing this movie, guys everywhere either tried to outdo this team’s antics or shared wacky tales of their own.

The ensemble cast was also crucial to this film’s success. Eugene Levy as Biggs’s character’s dad, Elizabeth as the hot foreign exchange student, Alyson Hannigan as the sexually frustrated band geek-—this film wasn’t short on characters. With veterans such as Levy at the helm, this movie had the appeal of classic comedies updated for the 21st century.

There was actually a message too. The film explored everything from random hookups to sex with older women, and the film’s relationships had varied success rates based on the strength of their foundations.

It’s the ultimate party movie for young people; may as well have it in your collection for such an occasion.
