Ghost

Starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopy Goldberg "Ghost" is a very clever and original ghost story told from the deceased’s point of view.

Sam Wheat (Swayze) is a successful New York City banker who lives a happy life with his girlfriend Molly (Moore). One night, while coming back from the theater, a burglar tries to rob them. Sam reacts and the criminal shoots. Sam runs after the thief, but he escapes. When Sam turns back he finds the shocking truth, his body lying dead in Molly’s arms. Sam is now a spirit in limbo.

Refusing to follow the light Sam stays, following his funeral. Molly tries to rebuild her life without him and finally finds out that the burglary was not by accident. someone hired the criminal to steal one of Sam’s belongings and the thief's not done yet.

At first Sam is unable to communicate with anybody. Then he finds a fraudulent fortune teller (Goldberg), who claims that she can talk to the dead. While enjoying all her acting during one of her sessions Sam accidentally discovers that she can hear him. With her help and with the teachings of a veteran ghost who can move objects Sam tries to warn Molly about the danger she is in.

Whoopy Goldberg delivers a delightful and diverting performance, earning a deserved Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress. Some of the best comical moments are performed by her character.

Since we follow the ghost’s steps we (the audience) never get afraid of him like we would get of a regular haunting. The scenes in which he scares other people are actually fun for us, a curious inversion of concepts. There are scary moments, however, like when the shadow demons show up to claim the “bad people’s” souls. Curiously the shadows’ disturbing howls were made through baby cries and they ran at a very slow speed.

"Ghost" had also very good special effects for its time. Even seventeen years after its first release the scenes in which Sam passes through solid objects are fairly convincing.

The great script, written by Bruce Joel Rubin, has the perfect combination of romance, fright and comedy, providing pleasing huge variety of scenes. It makes "Ghost" a movie that will entertain some people because of the love story (properly swayed by the melodic soundtrack) while compelling others because of the haunting moments. Pick your side and enjoy.
