Hustle and Flow

"Hustle and Flow" starts slow, but that’s because the strength of the film is in how interesting, likable, and easy to relate to the characters are. The film takes a page out of "Pretty Woman’s" play-book and tells a story about someone in the business of prostitution overcoming obstacles to make it in a legitimate business. Once you make it through the film’s boring first act, the movie is a riveting, emotional experience.

Terrence Howard was nominated for an Oscar for his performance as Djay, a Memphis pimp with a dream of becoming a rap star, while the original song “It’s Hard Out There for a Pimp” took home the award. Combined with the interesting characters, the music really made the film stand out. Unfortunately, music is absent from the beginning of the film. If Djay’s musical talent had been utilized earlier in the movie, perhaps, the film wouldn’t have taken so long to get interesting. Still, the movie is worth watching and overall deserves two thumbs up.
