Rocky IV
"Rocky IV" (1985) was written when the cold war was at its peak. The film’s antagonist is Ivan Drago, an undefeated, seemingly indestructible Russian boxer. First, Rocky is in Apollo Creed’s corner when the former heavyweight champion faces Drago. When that match ends disastrously, Rocky agrees to travel to Russia to face the Siberian monster himself.
The brilliance of "Rocky IV" is the film’s ability to take a sensitive political subject like the Cold War and turn it into a warm-hearted film that anybody could enjoy, regardless of their political alliances. The film’s ending is arguably more powerful than any of the Rocky films. My only complaint is that a large bulk of the film’s story is told through training montages rather than dialog. Because the music associated with the training montages is so good, however, many might consider this tendency to be a strength of the film, rather than a weakness. "Rocky IV," in my estimation, is the best Rocky film besides the original.
