Blood & Chocolate

Vivian (Agnes Bruckner) is hiding from her past in Bucharest, Romania. However, reminders of who she is and what she has done surround her daily. Her parents and siblings emigrated from Romania to the United States when Vivian was very young. By the age of ten, Vivian's family had been hunted and murdered. Vivian was the only one who managed to get out alive. She believes it was her fault that they were killed. So, she went to live with her only remaining family, an aunt back in Bucharest.

Her aunt was the wife of their family's leader, but because of tradition, was replaced after seven years. Vivian is slated to become the next wife, as a family prophecy singles her out as the one who will lead the family into the future. Vivian's family is a pack of werewolves, although they operate under the more ancient (and foreign) name of loup garoux. Similar to other were-myths, the loup garoux are allergic to silver -— too much unattended is fatal -— and can change from wolf to human. A few differentiating factors are that the loup garoux do not require a full moon to change and may show signs of the wolf if hurt or aroused. Vivian is resigned to her fate and her lifestyle until she meets a fellow American.

Aiden (Hugh Dancy) has been on the run for years. His father's brand of discipline tended toward the brutal, and the last interaction between them left a bitter rift, which his father threatened would be his last. Aiden has fled to Europe and become a successful graphic novelist. His latest idea has brought him to Bucharest to track the legend of the loup garoux. After a brief encounter with Vivian, the couple falls hard for one another.

Vivian's family is not pleased with the match, so she warns him to leave on schedule. Her cousins amplify this plea by threatening Aiden. One cousin, Rafe, gets so violent that Aiden is forced to kill him. Vivian must to choose between the man she loves and the family that has kept her safe. An interesting twist on an old tale and worth the time if this sort of thing appeals to you.
