A New Wave
At first glance this movie looks like an attack of the 90s teen stars, with Andrew Keegan and Lacey Chabert as the two lead characters. However, in the mix are up and coming comic gold, such as John Krasinski (“The Office”) and Dean Edwards.
The story focuses on an aspiring artist, Desmond (Keegan), who is stuck at a mind numbingly dull bank teller job. His roommate, the "off the hinges" Gideon (Krasinski), enlists the help of Desmond and their friend Rupert (Edwards) to rob the bank. However, when Gideon uses the notorious “heist” movies of Hollywood to plan their robbery Desmond starts to have second thoughts. Gideon wrote a screenplay depicting how the robbery would go. Desmond’s girlfriend Julie (Chabert) pushes him to put himself out there and attain his goal of being an accomplished painter. With these two people pulling him in different directions he doesn’t know which way to turn. He feels inadequate to be with Julie and questions if it is better for her to be with or without him.
Krasinski was the highlight of the movie, he seamlessly transitioned into the character and has impeccable comedic timing and physicality. The story was simple and almost uninteresting, but not unwatchable. The thing that hurt this film the most was the editing and technical aspect of it. It had an overall feel of a film student’s first attempt at a project. The transitions were abrupt and choppy, which stuck out like a sore thumb and took away from the story. The concept was interesting, but didn’t really translate all that well to the screen. If you feel like watching some actors that were around when you were growing up or if you are a fan of Krasinski you may want to venture to Blockbuster and pick this up.
The movie was mediocre, but the DVD has some cool extras. It is equipped with bloopers, scenes and a music video.
