Pizza
A light story of outcasts that is the movie equivalent to comfort food.
"Pizza" is a deliciously simple slice of comedy. The story of a teen hanging out with a pizza delivery guy may seem creepy, but this film comes off as original and surprisingly sweet. This is a tale about the difficulty and awkwardness of growing up. As the characters move through the night, their lives come into harsh perspective and criticism.
Cara-Ethyl (Kylie Sparks) celebrates her 18th birthday with all the trimmings, except friends to share it with. This brainy misfit’s party is a pretty sad affair until the attractive Matt (Ethan Embry) shows up to deliver pizza. He takes pity on the girl, and she is able to convince him to let her help deliver pizza. This pair strikes up an odd friendship as they meet unusual people from Matt's life from his customers to his ex-girlfriends. As Cara-Ethyl struggles with fitting in and being cool, Matt can’t seem to get his life in order to actually follow through with anything. The strange pairing must learn from each other in order to move on with their lives.
This premise becomes as cheesy as it sounds. Especially when Cara-Ethyl and Matt directly point out the things they need to change, as if the audience needs to be hit over the head with the film’s message. The tone is a little inconsistent, but overall the awkwardness in this movie is what makes it charming. The messy quirkiness of this throw-back to 80s teen comedies lights up in Sparks’ performance. Her straight faced obliviousness is both funny and endearing. The problems in the script aside, the film’s clever humor will leave you with a refreshing taste.
