30 Days of Night begins like a typical horror movie; the setting is somewhere isolated, most of the movie is in darkness and, of course, loud noises and frightening images are portrayed. However, as the plot unfolds we learn that unlike many other horror films, this one is not about cheap thrills. "30 Days of Night" is about an evil unlike any other and the powerlessness to stop it.
Set in Alaska, a small village community faces a month of darkness each year where the sun sets and does not rise again for 30 days. However, this year something is lurking in the shadows, waiting for the night. As these vampire creatures prey off of the people of the village, a sheriff (Josh Hartnett) and his community members must find a way to escape the evil and save the ones they love.
Although this movie will have you jumping out of your seat from beginning to end, its amazing plot will also keep you in suspense and awe at the complexity of the situation and the characters involved. Between a separated couple, an elderly man with Alzheimer's and his son, two brothers and a man who has lost his family, this movie encompasses the ideals of love, sacrifice and family. This town faces every element of evil; and in doing so, the community begins to understand what is truly important to them. Very few times have I seen scary movies that actually thrill me while giving purpose to the film's story. "30 Days of Night" definitely does both, and I recommend it to anyone who appreciates a good horror movie. However, be prepared for a lot of blood and gore.
