Fred Claus
Ah, the holiday season. A time for lovely Christmas-themed films, and this year is no exception. The Vince Vaughn-headliner "Fred Claus" is cute Christmas fare. Starring Vaughn, Paul Giamatti, Rachel Weisz, Miranda Richardson, Kathy Bates and Kevin Spacey, the movie is a charming tale of love, friendship and the ever-strong bond between family members.
Paul Giamatti gives a lovable turn as the jolly man, while Vaughn mainly plays the ne'er do well brother, Fred Claus. Fred lives in Chicago, and we are introduced to the adult version of him as he repossesses the television of a little girl. His advice to her - basically, get over it. Fred's love life is little more impressive, as he also continually disappoints his love interest and long-suffering girlfriend, Rachel Weisz. Upon being arrested for collecting charity funds under false pretenses, Fred vows to help his brother, under Santa's condition that Fred come to the North Pole to help prepare for Christmas.
Ultimately this is a children's story, surprisingly, as it is also simultaneously a Vince Vaughn movie. The best scene is a support group for brothers who are less famous then their siblings. The cameo appearances are quite enjoyable, especially from Stephen Baldwin.
In the end, this film, like the reminiscent "Santa Clause," is about an ultimately good but gruff man learning to love Christmas all over again. This is a good holiday movie and suitable for all ages.
