The Nightmare Before Christmas
Meet Jack Skellington. He’s your average ordinary Skeleton. He has hopes and dreams, a ghost dog named Zero, and supportive friends (including vampires, witches, and a mad scientist) that will do anything he asks for, including taking over Christmas. But the thing is Jack, who comes from Halloweentown, doesn’t realize that what he is doing is wrong. He just wants a change from the scary plans and boring Halloween events that have become his life. He wants adventure. He wants change. And he finds it when he stumbles through a tree shaped door in the middle of the woods and discovers Christmastown, a world full of snowflakes, candy canes, and of course, Mr. Santa Claus himself.
Upon entering this magical land, Jack finds the excitement he was looking for in Halloweentown and decides that the only way to get fulfillment is by bringing some of the world of Christmastown to his own trick or treat world. He plots to take over the holiday of Christmas. Using the people of his town as elves, and becoming “Mr. Claws” himself, Jack embarks on the incredibly scary journey of bringing joy and happiness to the children of the world. However, his journey soon turns from hopeful to frightful when his dream for fulfillment becomes a nightmare. Will it be too late to fix Christmas? Only Jack and Santa Claus can determine the final outcome. Nonetheless, this musical magical film will leave you thanking your friends, dreaming about the future, and singing until you sleep.
Tim Burton films never cease to amaze me. Such a seemingly dark movie has such a positive and hopeful message. Jack Skellington, although different and darker than your average protagonist, hopes and dreams about the same things that we all dream about. We all want adventure, and we all want change. But the thing that Jack’s friends finally helped him realize was that he had a special place in their hearts. He brought change and adventure to them. And ultimately it took for something to happen, to make him appreciate what he already had.
