Angel: Season Five

Live fast. Die never.

Angel was at the end of his rope at the climax of season four. His son Connor was so troubled after having to kill his “daughter” that he kidnapped his lover (Cordelia, who was in a coma) and strapped himself, Cordelia and a bunch of innocent bystanders to explosives. The only solution available to Angel was to take an offer from the law firm that plagued Angel and his team throughout the series -- Wolfram and Hart.

The law firm offered their LA office to Angel Investigations in exchange for altering the collective memory of the world to forget that Angel had a son and placed Connor with a fake family who thought he was related to them. Each member of the team was given their own team of employees with Angel at the helm as CEO.

Harmony, one of Cordelia’s clique in high school, became a vampire at Sunnydale High Graduation in 1999, but reformed her ways and took the job as Angel’s secretary. Another blast from the Sunnydale past joined the cast a few episodes in. Spike, cursed with a soul (just like Angel), was brought back from the death he experienced in the series finale of Buffy to add an intoxicating humor to the Angel mix.

From the original cast, Winifred (Fred) Burkle the science whiz, Charles Gunn (Gunn) the muscle, Wesley Wyndam-Pryce the demonologist/ex-Watcher and Lorne the empath demon take their place among the different arms of Wolfram and Hart. Fred is put in charge of the company’s laboratory, Wesley in charge of research, Lorne the entertainment department and Gunn is outfitted with a super knowledge of law (demon and human).

Season five is largely a comic relief after the heavy drama of the previous two seasons. Spike and Angel renew their hilarious rivalry and, even in the midst of complex situations, the cast finds time to debate whether cavemen could take astronauts in a fight. Although the series ended unexpectedly at the climax of this season, it stands out as the most fun and the most accomplished season of the series.
