Sweeney Todd

Tim Burton’s film, “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”, stars heart throb Johnny Depp in his first musical. Mrs. Lovett is played by Helena Bonham Carter.

Depp plays a murderous barber Benjamin Barker, a.k.a Sweeney Todd, who is seeking vengeance for his wife’s unfortunate happenings. Mrs. Lovett becomes his confident and partner in crime, turning his murder victims into meat pies. Judge Turpin is played by Alan Rickman, the person whom Todd wishes to murder.

Benjamin Barker was living a happy life in London working as a barber and enjoying family life with his wife and baby. Judge Turpin sent Barker to Australia on a bogus charge so he could rape Barker’s wife. She poisoned herself after the incident and their baby, Johanna, became a ward of Judge Turpin.

Barker returns to London years later where he visits Mrs. Lovett’s pie shop. She recognizes him, tells him what happened while he was gone, and rents him the room above her shop. She reveals his old razors to him which make him very happy. He decides to reopen his barber shop.

After Judge Turpin gets away from Todd and he misses the chance to kill him, Todd goes on a killing spree while Mrs. Lovett’s meat pie business booms with success of its new and improved recipe.

The plot twists and turns while the mood of the film remains hauntingly sinister throughout its duration. The movie is based on the hit Broadway musical and has been nominated for three Oscars and numerous other awards.
