Brown Sugar
A story of love and hip-hop.
Just like a “perfect verse over a tight beat”, Brown Sugar hits the spot when in the need of soup for the soul.
An all-star cast shine in this romantic comedy about love and life in the world of hip-hop. Sydney (Sanaa Lathan) and Dre (Taye Diggs) are childhood friends who share a passion for music and an unsung love for each other. But when Dre marries the wrong woman, Sydney must make her move, or risk losing her soul mate forever.
A refreshingly mellow comedy, Brown Sugar tallies a score for another successful Black Hollywood film.
Although a typical ‘boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl’ story, Lathan and Diggs’ intimate performance holds us in our chairs, eager for Sydney and Dre to ultimately admit that they are made for each-other.
With guest appearances from real hip-hop performers such as De La Soul, Method Man, Common, and Talib Kweli (to name a few), and an ensemble cast of Diggs, Mos Def and Queen Latifah, it is no wonder that this film hit a beat in Hollywood.
Brown Sugar is relaxed yet passionate, and intertwines music and love in a natural cinematic style, reminiscent of Director Spike Lee.
The special features on the DVD include a full-length audio commentary with Director Rick Famuyawi and Editor Dirk Westervelt, a selection of deleted scenes with optional commentary, music videos “Love Of My Life” (An Ode To Hip Hop) and “Brown Sugar” (Extra Sweet), and the theatrical trailer for the film. This DVD does not disappoint.
With lyrical dialogue, sexy beats and genuine performances, Brown Sugar is a must-have for any real hip-hop lover.
