A Knight's Tale

Heath Ledger and Shannyn Sossamon star in the 2001 film “A Knight’s Tale.” Written and directed by Brian Helgeland, the movie is about a peasant squire who creates a new identity for himself as a knight.

The plot is inspired by the true story of Ulrich von Lichtenstein as well as “The Canterbury Tales.” William, played by Ledger, begins on a journey with his two sidekicks Roland and Wat after William’s master dies unexpectedly. The three men run into an unknown writer named Chaucer while on the road. Since William does not have proper paper work to be recognized as a knight, he persuades Chaucer to forge family lineage documents that will prove he is a knight. William’s drive makes him determined to prove himself as a jousting champion at the country’s competition. Along the way, a breathtaking female captures his heart.
