Alvin and the Chipmunks
CGI Update
This updated film version of the classic cartoon chipmunk trio features CGI versions of Alvin, Simon, and Theodore with live actors playing the human roles. A sign that the movie wants to appeal to contemporary tastes comes in the opening scene, when Alvin, Simon, and Theodore are hoarding nuts in a tree while singing Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day.”
The chipmunks’ tree is cut down and taken to a music studio, where it is used as the lobby’s Christmas tree. The music studio is also where songwriter Dave Seville (Jason Lee) is hoping to get his songs picked up by wealthy studio executive Ian Hawke (Michael Cross), whose insincere charm, as well as his last name (hawks prey on chipmunks) reveal him to be the movie’s villain. Soon, the chipmunks hitch a ride from the studio to Dave’s house and end up living there. Eventually, however, the chipmunks believe Dave doesn’t want them around and are driven to Ian, who uses the chipmunks’ singing talent for his own gain.
Speaking of singing, both “The Chipmunk Song” and “Witch Doctor” are in the movie. Those who remember the original version of the first title will probably be pleased with its film version. “Witch Doctor,” however, is changed to accommodate audiences more familiar with hip-hop and backup dancers.
Dave’s relationship with the chipmunks is the heart of the movie, as he slowly accepts the chipmunks as family and saves them from Ian’s clutches. Romance also blooms between Dave and his neighbor and ex-girlfriend Claire Wilson (Cameron Richardson). Unless you refuse to have your 2-D picture of Alvin, Simon, and Theodore altered in any way, adults and their children can probably find something to like about Alvin and the Chipmunks.
