Aliens vs Predator: Requiem
Note to the Strause brothers: If you’re making a film entitled Aliens vs Predator, it should contain a substantial amount of Aliens fighting Predators. Honestly now, I was not expecting the second coming of Rashomon when I hesitantly purchased my ticket, but I certainly wasn’t expecting an episode of The OC either. The problem with this film is that it spends too much time developing characters that are neither Aliens nor Predators.
Much like its predecessor, AVP: Requiem fails to capture either the terror of the Alien films or the action of the Predator films. Instead, the audience is subjected to the needless subplot developing the backstories of a handful of characters that reside in the small town of Gunnison, Colorado, the location of the title characters' showdown; most of these scenes feel more like filler and at times, such as the love interest between main character Ricky and damsel-in-distress Jesse, they can be downright nauseating. Also, for some reason, most of the fight scenes between the Aliens and Predators are filmed in a very dark setting at close angles, so it’s extremely difficult to decipher most of the action.
On the plus side, AVP: Requiem has a good amount of gore, which is sure to alleviate some of the disdain fans of the series will undoubtedly have towards this film. Ultimately, if you’re expecting a mindless, but fun, battle royale of Aliens and Predators, prepare to be disappointed; but, if you like cliché, two-dimensional characters, bad acting, and irrelevant subplots, then this is the film for you.
