The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

Bill Murray is superb in this Wes Anderson classic.

Like most Wes Anderson films, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou consists of a number of scenes that leaves the audience asking themselves, "Should I be laughing or crying right now?" Anderson has a knack for creating situations such as this because the characters in his films, while emotionally complex, carry themselves so awkwardly that it is difficult not to laugh at them, regardless of how harrowing or complex the situation. A particularly awkward, albeit, hilarious situation occurs when Zissou (Bill Murray) is partaking in a rather heated interview with journalist Jane Winslett-Richardson (Cate Blanchett). While Zissou is angrily questioning Winslett-Richardson's motives, an orca can be seen in the background conspicuously soliciting attention.

Also, like all of Anderson's films, the star-studded cast offers a top-notch performance. Bill Murray is particularly captivating in this film; he does an excellent job of conveying the emotion his character, Steve Zissou, is feeling. Throughout the film, ZIssou finds himself in a number of emotionally draining and gratifying situations in which Murray excellently articulates through both his superb acting and comedic swagger. Jeff Goldblum is also excellent in this film; his unique and quirky style work excellently in his portrayal of Alistair Hennessey, Zissou's condescending rival.

This film is visually stunning with a number of lavish scenes accentuated by the illustrious props found in each particular set, notably, a number of the paintings seen in the backgrounds. The soundtrack is quite excellent as well, featuring a number of David Bowie songs as well as Devo, and Iggy and the Stooges, to name a few. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is an excellent film with intricate and human characters, a number of fantastic visuals, and high-quality acting and directing.
