Due South Season 2

A TV show from the mid-1990s about a Canadian Mountie and a Chicago cop who team up to solve cases.

The television series, Due South, centers around a polite, courteous and naive Mountie named Benton Fraser (Paul Gross), who originally comes to Chicago on the trail of his father’s killers, accompanied by his half-wolf Diefenbaker. In Chicago, he teams up with brash, streetwise Detective Ray Vecchio (David Marciano) to get justice for his father’s murder. Afterwards, Fraser stays on in Chicago, working for the Canadian Consulate there, while he and Ray continue to solve cases together. Season two of the show introduces Fraser’s new boss and love interest, Inspector Meg Thatcher (Camilla Scott), but sees the departure of Detective Louis Gardino (Daniel Kash) from the series. Originally airing in the mid-1990s, the datedness of the show can be seen in the look and size of the characters’ cell phones, which can have a nostalgic effect on the viewer. Nevertheless, Due South contains a good mix of humor and drama, having clever writing and good character development in it. A number of episodes are worth watching, among these, the season opener “North,” the dramatic, Ray-centric episodes “Juliet Is Bleeding” and “The Duel,” the humorous “All the Queen’s Horses” and its follow-up, “Red, White or Blue.” The last few episodes of the season explore what makes Fraser and Ray’s friend- and partnership work, despite how different the two men are from each other. The DVD set itself contains the season’s 18 episodes on three discs, without any special features or subtitles. The main menu is an episode selection menu. After picking an episode, one can then choose to play the entire episode or use scene selection. The video quality is occasionally grainy, but for fans of the show, that shouldn’t be much of a problem.
