Doctor Who - The Complete Second Series (2006)
The DVD set of Doctor Who – The Complete Second Series rewards viewers who have been continually watching the show on television or DVD. It starts things off with a Christmas special called “The Christmas Invasion,” which has the main character, Rose (Billie Piper), adjusting to the new appearance of the Doctor (David Tennant). Besides Rose’s mom, Jackie (Camille Coduri), and her friend, Mickey (Noel Clarke), continuing to appear in the show, the second season also brings back a villain from the first season, Cassandra, in the actual first episode of the season, “New Earth.” (Later on in the season, we see that Cassandra is not the only familiar villain to resurface either.) The character of Mickey also becomes more important as he decides to join Rose and the Doctor on their travels through time and space. We also get introduced to Sarah Jane Smith, a character apparently from the older Doctor Who series. The heart of the show, however, is the relationship between Rose and the Doctor, which, as in the first season finale, is given much attention at the season’s end.
Special features are included on the DVD set as well, including video diaries by David Tennant, a behind-the-scenes series called “Doctor Who: Confidential” and a “Children in Need” special. The special is highly recommended viewing, as, in only a few minutes, it closes the continuity gap between the season one finale and the start of “The Christmas Invasion.” And having that satisfaction as a viewer is, as the Doctor would say, “Fantastic!”
