Speed Racer
“Speed Racer” proves a rolling good time for all ages!
How far would you go to pursue your dream? Would you do whatever it takes, even if the ends don’t always justify the means?
These are questions that Speed Racer, the protagonist in his self-titled film, must face as he pursues his aspirations of becoming one of the best racers in the world. Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci and Matthew Fox headline this film, which draws its source material from a Japanese cartoon made popular in the 1960s.
The film tracks Speed’s early years, where we learn the source of his intense determination for racer success: his brother, Rex Racer. Rex becomes a racing legend, only to die in a mysterious blast.
The movie also introduces Speed’s family and his loyal girlfriend, Trixie, who has been with Speed since his childhood. Speed’s father, Pops Racer, is also the designer of Speed’s Mach 5, a car that would see additional renovations as the movie progresses. As Speed grows into his racing talents, he learns that not everything in the world of racing is as straightforward as it appears.
Speed’s success attracts the attention of Royalton Industries, whose owner attempts to convince Speed to race for him; when he refuses, the owner makes it clear to Speed that he will never race again, literally, or figuratively. Speed fights him, and other naysayers, through two key victories; his win at the Crucible, the race that took his brother’s life, and his triumph at the Grand Prix. Along the way, he gains allies, including the enigmatic Racer X, rivals, and learns what it means to be a champion.
This film was written and directed by the Wachowski brothers, known for their efforts in The Matrix. Influence from that film is readily apparent as the screen is bombarded with slow-motion effects and vivid rainbows of colors. However, the movie also includes some reflective moments, such as when Speed learns that races are fixed, the realization that everyone is out to get him, and the fear that envelops him after assassins try to take him out.
Though the film’s plot can be predictable, as viewers know that Speed will eventually prevail, it has impressive points of character development; one instance of this is made clear as Speed’s father watches his son grow up and even argues with him once he learns that Speed left on his own to participate in an underground racing league. Racer X is also developed well in the film, as he goes from an arrogant hotshot to an individual who expresses concern for Speed’s well-being.
This is an experience that can be strongly recommended to fans of the Wachowskis' previous works, families, and anyone that seeks two hours of adventure and excitement.
