Iron Man

In the Marvel adapatation, after being captured and escaping terrorist holding, Tony Stark builds a high tech suit to use against all evils.

With Marvel adapting every comic book they’ve made in their existence, it was only a matter of time until they made Iron Man.

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is a weapons manufacturer and industrialist who is captured and forced to build a weapon for a gang of guerilla terrorists. Stark devises a plan to design a virtually indestructible suit to escape. After this life changing incident, Stark realizes he wants to use this technology to fight against all facets of evil.

The main reason I was so engrossed in the movie is because of Downey as Tony Stark. He lives the life we all wish we could. His fun-loving bachelor lifestyle and his charisma radiates through him. Plain and simple, he’s just cool; both when Stark is Iron Man and when he is himself. He has that lovable smart ass kick to him and witty responses. Downey is the bread and butter of this movie, taking it all on while he interacts with a very lively supporting cast. They include: Terrence Howard, the glamorous and naïve Gwyneth Paltrow, and co-chair of Stark Industries Jeff Bridges. All were wonderful to watch, certainly in their interactions with Stark on screen.

This is an origin story as we see how Tony Stark becomes Iron Man. One observation I noticed is that Stark builds for the entire movie! For the most part, we see him secluded in his lab building his high-tech suit while the rest of the world thinks he’s gone crazy or is in some sort of post traumatic state from being captured. Much of the movie is dominated by this continual construction, but it’s because of Tony Stark that we are so glued to the screen. One flaw I spot is they kind of spring a villain on us in the last quarter of the movie, just to get it in for a final showdown where Stark can finally show us what his suit is made of.

Iron Man is certainly one of the better Marvel adaptations. It’s on par with the first two Spidermans and will stay there for quite a while. Other than that I don’t seen any other Marvel comic beating it in theaters to this date. Certain scenes in X2: X-Men United, but not on the scale of a fully developed cinematic story. Iron Man definitely kicked off the summer blockbuster lineup with a bang and in the words of a kid at the 2008 MTV Movie Awards, “it will do, until The Dark Knight comes out.”
