Bee Movie

A bee ventures out of the hive to sue the human race.

I have to say that any Pixar or Dreamworks animated feature captures my attention and has an unofficial clocked guarantee that the entertainment value will be more than expected. The kookiness of the little world imagined and brought to life is warm and inviting, where humor can be found around every street of that little community. This scientific theory based solely on my own vast movie watching career holds true with Jerry Seinfeld’s Bee Movie, which was advertised like crazy. The only movie I think can match its marketing campaign is The Dark Knight’s viral campaign.

Bee Movie paints the picture of Barry B. Benson (Jerry Seinfeld), a bee who just graduated with a billion other bees from college. He refuses to conform to the lifestyle of working a single job for the rest of his life, which is one of the subcategory jobs under the hive’s ultimate goal in life: making honey. Barry ventures out of the hive in hopes to find his destiny when he runs into trouble and is saved by a woman, Vanessa Bloome (Renee Zellweger). They develop a lush friendship and Barry discovers where the honey his hive produces goes, which leads to his quest to sue the human race.

I have to say the whole gimmick was quite amusing as the hive was converted to our world just in bee form using honey and whatnot. The story was smooth and sound as it was very standard and simple. At the hinge point building up the end, it got really serious as the fallout of the climax reigned in as very desolate and borderline catastrophic. It was essential to the story, but for an animated picture, I was a little taken aback.

Fans of Seinfeld will enjoy this as Jerry buzzes around replicating some of the same shtick he’s been saying for years. The cast is endless as comedians and notable names jump in and out of the story that have big contributions. Seinfeld created a cute little world to escape to for us as to put it simply: Dreamworks animation has been Seinfeldnized.
