Mr. & Mrs. Smith

A couple discovers they're both assassins hired to kill each other.

The film, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, will probably be overshadowed by the circulating gossip and juicy Hollywood romance hovering around it rather than the quality of the viewing experience. Everyone knows that this movie ended the Brad Pitt-Jennifer Aniston marriage as Pitt went on to start a romance with his costar, Angelina Jolie. Oddly enough, in the supporting role, Vince Vaughn started dating Pitt’s ex. Seeing two of the sexiest stars in Hollywood on screen together, kicking butt and in each other’s arms, and at the time them sparking an impervious relationship, put people in the seats of this 2005 summer blockbuster.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith follows a mundane and seemingly normal married couple, John (Brad Pitt) and Jane Smith (Angelina Jolie), who, to describe their relationship, claim there’s a big bubble of nothingness lingering in between them, hence the emotional distance between them. Little do they know, each of them are assassins working for different agencies, which explains their troubled marriage. From there they are surprised to learn that they are assassins hired to kill each other.

The heartfelt notion of whether they love each other more than how much they love their killing profession is tested throughout. Pitt and Jolie dazzle us with their onscreen chemistry, ranging from out of touch to passionate. When they trash up their house in an attempt to kill each other, it’s quite exciting as they appear cool. The shootouts are explosive as it has a certain action quality that makes you suspend disbelief, but what action flicks nowadays don’t?

The dialogue between the two isn’t very clever as it might be considered by some to be downright awful, but all that can be said about this action-romance is it’s trashy yet fun. In the summer, what more can you ask for? The saving grace is the Pitt and Jolie romance. Their charisma seeps through and overlays the weak writing, thus distracting us. When Pitt and Jolie clash, it’s an entertaining sort of therapy to rescue their marriage on the rocks.
