Be Cool
Chili Palmer tries to transition from the movie to music industry.
Get Shorty was a great movie with a solid nuclear cast that was well rounded and diverse. How could Hollywood obliterate the thought of its greatness? By making a sequel, Be Cool. Here, they upped the ante by doubling the cast of noticeably named stars and throwing together a mess of a script to shoot. In this reviewer’s opinion, the results were disastrous.
John Travolta returns as the cool Chili Palmer, but he wants to get out of the movie industry and sets his sights on the music industry. It’s not too hard of a transition as he is still his tough self and romances a widowed music exec, Edie Athens (Uma Thurman). There’s some heavy fallout when Edie owes her deceased husband’s money to other record companies and gangster rappers who want a taste. From here, Chili steps in and acts as the quarterback.
The star-studded cast is endless as it spans from Harvey Keitel to Vince Vaughn to Cedric the Entertainer. It’s almost a Pulp Fiction reunion. Personally, I thought Be Cool was trash without the entertainment value. It has no redeeming quality of being a guilty pleasure, as it is just not funny. You wait and wait, but there’s nothing to show for it.
The script provides the foundation of problems for this movie. Travolta reprises his same demeanor and charisma as in Get Shorty, however, the terrible writing just makes his dialogue sound like nails on a chalkboard. It’s not refreshing in any light, as it comes off as stale, old, and just bitterly disgraceful. Honestly, you sit there and are annoyed at the moving pictures, as you will no doubt throw your arms up in disgust.
Be Cool is nothing short of an exhausting experience of frustration. It was a failure on every level known to man. Sure, it points out the sites of the luxurious high life of L.A., but all in all, they pieced this together by sprinkling it with the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. Be Cool is a half-hearted effort trying to boast a once great John Travolta.
