Firefly

The final frontier meets the wild, wild west.

The movie, Serenity, was wildly popular but not everyone knows that the film existed to close the loop in the story line of the TV series, Firefly. Although the network canceled the show toward the end of the first season, it has since gained a cult following. The series opens 500 years in the future. After depleting Earth’s resources, humans had to branch out and “terra-form” other planets. Most people are fluent in English and Mandarin (currently the world’s two most-used languages), and speak in a hybrid.

Our hero is Captain Malcolm (Mal) Reynolds of the Firefly-class ship, Serenity. After fighting as a “brown-coat” for the resistance, Mal has had to resort to petty piracy and salvaging to make a living. His ragtag crew is assembled of people from all over the ‘verse (Universe). His first-mate is Zoe, who was in Mal’s regiment during the war. The pilot is Zoe’s husband, Wash. The mechanic is Kaylee, a spitfire grease monkey that Mal picked up on accident after his hired mechanic couldn’t fix a ship problem, and Kaylee could. Jayne is the muscle - he’s an ex-con who is also somewhat handy as a mechanic.

Inara isn’t technically a crew member, but she rents one of the ship’s shuttles for her Alliance-approved work as a companion (basically a prostitute). This lends credibility to the ship whenever boarded by the Alliance. Shepard Book is a passenger who often acts as the voice of reason when tempers flare.

Dr. Simon Tam and his sister, River, are running from the law when Mal offers them passage. Mal doesn’t know that Simon is bringing River, whom the Alliance is after for her telepathic abilities and genius IQ. She holds the key to a dark secret that isn’t revealed until the film.

It’s a shame that the network saw so little promise in this show. It is utterly unique, and it’s not a surprise that it has so many devoted fans. Everyone should enjoy this humorous and wonderful peek into the future.
