Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked
Learn about what goes on behind the pages of a comic book.
With the film, The Spirit, released recently, learning a little about the history of comic books would be an interesting way of appreciating them. Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked is a great overview from the early beginnings of Superman to today. This documentary shows how all the visuals and the messages have evolved with each generation.
Several well known comic book heroes get backgrounds just in case one didn’t remember how exactly heroes started. Interviews help explain exactly what the writers and artists wanted. All the interviewees are very well known in the comic book industry. Stan Lee brings a lot of insight into Marvel comics. He jokes around and continues his opinions on how some things he wanted he had to fight for. Kevin Smith gives an everyday man style insight on his interviews. Frank Miller is great, fleshing out several reasons why he wrote what he did.
The usage of comics with motion is an interesting take on reading each panel. They occasionally use animation in panels, emphasizing explosions and bullets flying. It almost makes me want to read interactive comics.
Time has really changed the comic book. From the war stories from World War II, psychedelic '60s, to the overly sexualized '90s, characters like Batman and Wonder Woman have evolved to fit their readers. Any fan of comic books should take a look at the documentary, even if you are a casual reader, or a dedicated fan of one hero.
