Mamma Mia! The Movie

The story of a bride-to-be trying to find her real father, told using hit songs by the popular '70s group, ABBA.

Mamma Mia! The Movie is the film adaptation of the ABBA musical, starring Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård. The story takes place on the Greek island of Kalokairi, where a girl, Sophie (Seyfried), lives with her mother, Donna (Streep). Sophie is getting married and wants nothing more than to have her father give her away. The only problem is that she does not know who her father is and there are three possibilities: Bill (Skarsgård), Sam (Brosnan), and Harry (Firth). To figure out the mystery, Sophie invites all three without her mother’s knowledge, positive that she’ll know her father when she meets him. However, when the men arrive and all three claim to be Sophie’s father, she can’t figure out who her real dad is. Things become even more complicated when Donna discovers Sam still has feelings for her.

Mamma Mia! is quite possibly the happiest movie of all time. Any conflict is diminished by the end of the movie, and everyone ends up with what they want. Despite the happiness, the emotions are real. Seyfried does an amazing job as Sophie, and when she talks about missing her father, the audience really feels her longing. The set and costumes are beautiful and sparkly, setting a cheery tone. The ABBA songs are so catchy that it’s impossible not to sing along. Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, and Christine Boranski sing their songs commendably, while the men sound, at least, passionate. In fact, the only complaint about Mamma Mia! is Brosnan’s voice. When he sings, it’s almost impossible not to laugh and wonder why the producers couldn’t dub his voice. However, not even this can ruin the fantastic mood. Mamma Mia! The Movie is an amazing film and will put you in a great mood for weeks.
