A History of Violence

A History of Violence is a film based on a graphic novel of the same name. It centers on a small town man with a dangerous secret.

Tom Stall (played by Viggo Mortensen) is a business owner in the small town of Milbrook, Ind. He has a wife, Edie (Maria Bello), and two children, Jack (Ashton Holmes) and Sarah (Heidi Hayes). After Tom thwarts an attack from two robbers and is featured on the news, mobster Carl Fogarty (Ed Harris) comes to see him carrying a secret, which could tear the family apart.

The best part of this film was the cinematography. The film was shot very well, using dramatic angles and a contrast between light and dark to show the division in the psyches of the different characters.

The one failure of this film was its lack of development in terms of William Hurt's character, Richie Cusack. His character could have played a much larger part in defining Tom Stall's past.

If you are a fan of the graphic novel, or of dramatic films, A History of Violence is a must-see film.
