The Natural
This sports drama, starring Robert Redford, is a story of baseball and redemption.
The Natural is a heartwarming drama about the American pastime, baseball, and an opportunity for redemption.
The story focuses on Roy Hobbs (played by Robert Redford), an excellent baseball player, with a heart of gold and a terrible secret. He joins the New York Knights and immediately becomes a hit with the fans. He enters a relationship with the beautiful Memo Paris (Kim Basinger) and it takes a toll on his game. However, after he runs into his childhood sweetheart, Iris (Glenn Close), his fortunes, along with the Knights’ fortunes start to change.
The best part of this film was the acting of Robert Redford. He was the perfect person for the role. He was able to show the preoccupation of Roy Hobbs without letting it distract from the overall role. He was able to show the morality of Hobbs without it coming off too close to “Dudley Do-Right.”
The lowlight of this film was the acting of Michael Madsen as Bump Bailey. His character came off as smug rather than egotistical, as the role was meant to be. After a certain point, I was rooting for his character to meet an untimely demise.
If you are a sports fan, The Natural will be one of the best movies you will see.
