Obsessed

How far is too far to get the one you love?

Obsessed is not the best film of 2009 nor will it be up for any Academy Awards, but it wasn't as horrible as the press makes it out to be. However, it must be said that the most important parts of the film were all shown in the commercials on television.

Derek Charles (Idris Elba) is every woman's dream man. He's a rich, articulate and loving husband. He is also married to the beautiful Sharon (Beyonce Knowles) and they have a handsome little boy together. The two met when she was his assistant at the firm. Therefore, Derek and Sharon agreed that he could have no more female assistants since that is the same place where their relationship started. However, once Derek's gay assistant, Patrick (Matthew Humphreys), came down with an illness, a temp who had her eyes on Derek the moment she met him on the elevator, Lisa (Ali Larter), made her way to Derek's assistant's desk.

Lisa is charming and manipulative. She used those skills to move her way around the firm very quickly. Lisa switches jobs with other temps, organizes her schedule so it will match up with Derek's and even listens in on his phone calls. She finally made her move at the Christmas party which conveniently does not allow spouses to attend. Surprisingly, Derek rejects her despite all the alcohol in his system.

Even though Lisa apologizes for that night, she will not give up without a fight. She ends up going to his car in sexy lingerie, following him to a business retreat and shows up as an uninvited guest at the Charles's home. At this point viewers can tell she is mentally unstable and needs psychiatric help.

Knowles and Elba seemed as if they had a forced relationship. They didn't look like they were really in love. Knowles was a boring, jealous housewife who didn't do much but complain and Elba lacks personality and did not portray a realistic married man. Even a married man would admit if a woman is beautiful or not and Elba showed no sign of interest because he had to stay true to his wife.

Larter definitely stole Knowles's thunder in this film. I don't know whether it was her character or her acting but Knowles got on my nerves. The sorry excuse for a catfight gave male viewers something to look at while Knowles paraded around in heels and Larter was in a long shirt and underwear. If you were planning to see Obsessed, you could save your money and wait until it comes to HBO.
