Good Luck Chuck

It may seem like Charlie was blessed with good fortune, but, unfortunately, it wasn't as great as it appeared to be.

At first you may think Good Luck Chuck is another predictable romantic comedy where an average guy falls in love with a klutzy woman. However, the movie didn't come across that way. It was more focused on sex and this average guy being a sex-crazed maniac.

Charlie (Dane Cook) is a charming dentist and average guy who can't seem to settle down with just one person. That is, until he met a penguin loving woman named Cam (Jessica Alba). He wants to make things work with her but there's one thing that is preventing him from doing so; Charlie is cursed/blessed with being a lucky charm for women. Any person he does the deed with gets married to the next person she meets.

Charlie took this to his advantage and slept with most of the women in Seattle. He finally realizes this is a curse when he wants a commitment with Cam. Charlie feels he cannot have an intimate relationship with Cam until the curse is broken.

Cook is known to come up with hilarious lines in his comedy shows and some of it came through in his performance as Charlie. Although, I must admit, some of the jokes are overdone, like making fun of an obese woman.

Alba didn't bring much to the table. She was intended to be goofy and she did succeed in doing so when she got her skirt caught in a car door, ran into a metal pole and fell down a block of ice after a penguin slid into her. Sorry to disappoint male viewers but even though there are tons of less famous women willing to take their top off for the camera, Alba did not follow in their footsteps.

Then there were a few insignificant characters such as Charlie's wingman, Stu (Dan Fogler), and Cam's brother, Joe (Lonny Ross). Stu is a plastic surgeon who works on women's breasts. He was the one who encouraged Charlie to take the curse to his advantage. Stu even tried to pretend he was, in fact, Charlie to sleep with women. Joe works with the penguins with his sister and smokes a lot of pot. Other than that, there is no reason why this person should have a role in the film.

The movie ended with Charlie spending thousands of dollars to make sure Cam doesn't go to Antarctica. This movie could have ended in a number of different ways and I don't think the filmmakers chose the right one.
