Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

Better than just your average rom-com.

Don't expect Fool's Gold or Failure to Launch. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is actually a good movie. Matthew McConaughey has been pigeonholed into the male lead in romantic comedies and it is no different here. What is different is that he is a completely unlikeable lecher and that men everywhere will be incredibly jealous of him for doing it so successfully.

McConaughey plays Connor Mead, a rich and famous photographer that sleeps with an endless amount of women. Reminded that his brother's wedding is the next day, he rushes to Newport to attend the rehearsal wedding, which is taking place in his Uncle Wayne's house.

Uncle Wayne was a notorious lady killer and after Connor had his heart broken by his first love, Wayne took him under his wing and taught him everything he knew. From these lessons, Connor turned into a cynical man that doesn't believe in love, much less marriage. During his first day back, he does everything to embarrass the people there, none more than Jenny Perrotti, the first love that turned him into the lecher he is today.

While in a drunken state, the ghost of Uncle Wayne appears, warning Connor that his playboy's path was wrong and that he better prepare for three ghosts to visit him, showing him why. Each of the ghosts arrives to show Connor experiences of his life that made him into what he is and he learns the true meaning of love.

This "Christmas Carol" adaptation puts an interesting twist on the classic story, changing the focus from Scrooge, a cold-hearted rich man, to Connor, a man wealthy in love but who doesn't care for it. It manages to be very funny. McConaughey is perfect in the role as the ultimate lady's man yet, it is his supporting cast that garners all the laughs, most notably Michael Douglas as Uncle Wayne and Emma Stone as Connor's first ghost, the Ghost of Girlfriends Past, and also Connor's very first sex partner.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is better than your average romantic-comedy. It'll keep you interested, laughing and even though you know it’s coming, eager to see how Connor finds redemption.
