Soul Men

This comedy focuses on two soul singers traveling cross-country while reconciling their differences.

Soul Men is a great comedy about the reunion of two formerly estranged soul singers, and the bond that forms between them.

Soul singers, Louis Hinds (played by Samuel L. Jackson) and Floyd Henderson (Bernie Mac), reunite after more than two decades of not speaking to one another, travel cross-country, playing concerts to honor Marcus Hooks (John Legend), a fellow soul singer who died. Cleo (Sharon Leal), a beautiful young woman in an abusive relationship, who is believed to be Floyd's daughter, accompanies them as a new singer. The group gets into a series of misadventures on the way to New York City, where the group is set to perform at the Apollo Theater.

The acting of Bernie Mac, in what would be one of his final roles, is superb. In this film, he is at the top of his comedic game. He played off of Samuel L. Jackson very well, and made the film much greater with his presence alone.

However, this film meets its own downfall, due to its completely unoriginal plot. I have seen several movies with a similar plot to Soul Men. I think if some small variations were made to the plot, it could be an original film.

I would recommend this film to fans of Jackson and Mac, due to their good performances, but not to anyone else, as this movie was not a good one.
