Oldboy
Korean film a hammer of a film.
Oldboy is an interesting movie. It is made all the more interesting due to it being an amazing film.
Oh Dae Su is a drunk with a present for his daughter, but he is arrested for his drunken behavior. Once bailed out, he is mysteriously kidnapped. He is kept in his prison for 15 years with no word as to why he is being held. We watch as he slowly loses his sanity then regains it, focused on revenge. Suddenly, he is released. Again, he is not told why, but he soon discovers he has only five days to find the reason behind his imprisonment.
Directed by the talented Chan Wook Park, Oldboy, the second in his vengeance trilogy, is both a visually stunning film and a dark revenge thriller. During his 15 year imprisonment, Oh Dae Su has fine tuned his body into a weapon, yet he is untested. On more than one occasion, we witness his destructive ability, including one of the best fight scenes filmed to date. Shot all in one take, Oh Dae Su singlehandedly takes out 12 men while walking down a corridor, armed with only a hammer.
Yet, Oldboy also crafts an interesting mystery. Accompanied by a young chef, who may be closer to Oh Dae Su than he could ever imagine, he must find out who is behind his situation. Who could possibly have so much hatred that they would imprison a man for 15 years without so much as a word of reason? Yet, it isn't the why that will shock you, but Oh Dae Su's final punishment that will. It is an interesting premise that heads to one of the greatest WTF moments I could possibly imagine.
Oldboy is disturbing yet compelling. Try to take your eyes off screen. Not only will you miss out on a film that is visually arresting, you may just miss out on a film that is worth watching several times over.
