Layer Cake
British gangster film is a fun romp.
This film was originally set to be directed by Guy Ritchie but was taken over by Matthew Vaughn after Ritchie moved away from making British gangster films. Vaughn, who produced Ritchie's first two films, takes a more serious approach to the material. While it doesn't come close to touching the light-hearted nature of Ritchie's gangster films, it cannot be denied it is of similar quality, if not better.
Daniel Craig plays a cocaine dealer in London. He runs a successful team and as his bank account approaches one million, he is looking toward retirement. One hurdle that comes his way is when his boss, Jimmy Price, asks him to find a girl named Charlie. He also sets him up with a flashy gangster named the Duke, who has one million ecstasy pills. The Duke is high profile for the low-key team, but how can they pass up a huge score like one million pills? They will soon find out that they should have.
Layer Cake is an extremely fun movie to watch. Craig, who is very charismatic, is the key to this film, but he has an impressive supporting cast. Colm Meaney and George Harris play Gene and Morty, respectively. Gene is Jimmy Price's number one enforcer, overseeing all of his illegal operations. Morty is the link to Jimmy Price, backing up the team with his reputation. He also has an eye-opening scene where he brutally beats down a former associate. Both actors are just wonderful to watch and really are a credit to the film.
Layer Cake is among the best of British gangster cinema. It is a fun watch of which you'll enjoy every minute.
