Just Like Heaven, starring Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo, is a romantic comedy with a lot of twists. If you are looking for a nice date movie, a cute flick to watch with the girls or even something to watch with your teenagers, this movie is worth the rental.
The film begins by introducing us to Elizabeth (Witherspoon), an over-worked young doctor at a San Francisco hospital. She seems to always put her career in front of her other important life factors, but it never seems to faze her. That is until she gets hit in a car accident.
Time seems to go by as you get introduced to David (Ruffalo), a lazy and apparently out of work man who is looking for a furnished apartment in the city. He stumbles upon a short-term lease that is fully furnished, and takes the opportunity immediately. Shortly after his nights of watching sports and beer-drinking begin, David is visited by what appears to be the ghost of Elizabeth. He later finds out it is her apartment, and she is trying to have him help figure out why she has unfinished business.
The pair seems to despise each other at first, but along the journey of figuring out what happened to Elizabeth's life, they seem to fall in love. The chemistry between the two is undeniable, and both actors did an amazing job as each character. Jon Heder makes an appearance as a quirky young paranormal communicator, and helps David when he needs more information on how to help the dead.
With a few surprising twists throughout, this movie has an excellent ending. The characters somehow wind up making their romance work when they settle Elizabeth's "unfinished" business.
While not being too serious, as we know the Oscar winning actress can be, or too funny like her character, Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, Witherspoon brings the perfect mix to this movie. She transforms from a hostile workaholic to a sincere and loveable woman. Ruffalo does an excellent job of playing an apathetic slacker, later transforming into a determined and love-stricken friend of a supposed ghost.
This movie is definitely great for audiences who like comedy, some romance, a great plot and a little suspense to make it all come together well.
