If you think you've seen the best there is from Mike Myers, think again. Even though this movie was released over a decade ago, the humor still surpasses comedies today.
Set in San Francisco, "So I Married an Axe Murderer" has even gained a following of natives to the area due to the many sites of the city shown in the movie.
Myers plays Charlie Mackenzie, an eccentric poet who has had terrible luck with women in his past. The movie even begins with a poetic ode to his recent girlfriend who may have even stolen his cat. Myers also plays his father, Stuart Mackenzie, a native of Scotland who displays his country's pride all over his home. Each scene with Stuart is hilariously entertaining, and his one-liners will stick with the audience for a long time. While picking up a Scottish meat at a butcher shop, Charlie runs into his love interest in the movie.
Nancy Travis plays Harriet Michaels, a down to earth woman with many hobbies. Shortly after meeting, Charlie hears from his overly paranoid mother that there is a woman killing her husbands shortly after she marries them. Since the source came from a questionable tabloid, Charlie doesn't think twice about the story. Once he starts to fall in love with Nancy though, he begins to realize that she has lived in the locations of the murdered husbands during the times of their deaths.
Charlie begins acting strangely, and goes into his poetic release by wanting to rhyme about his almost failed relationship. Since he can't seem to let Nancy go, he decides to marry her in a Scottish ceremony. The wedding is a must watch scene of this movie. Stuart and Charlie really give the viewer a chance to relate to them because of their wacky family traditions. Weddings are never simple, and Stuart proves this by his quirky attitude and mannerisms.
Charlie's best friend Tony, played by Anthony LaPaglia, is a cop who looks into the axe murdering wife case. Once he realizes it could actually be Nancy, he does his best to crash their honeymoon to prevent yet another fatality.
Without giving away the ending, Charlie is quite entertaining during the first few hours of the honeymoon. Since he still has suspicions, he does his best to avoid his new bride, and this is where his great acting in the movie comes out.
If you are in the mood to see a well-written comedy, this could be the movie for you. If you are wanting a comedy that truly exhibits what makes Mike Myers such a talented comedian, this is the movie for you to see.
