The Heartbreak Kid
He thought he found his perfect match, until he went on his honeymoon.
A honeymoon is supposed to be the greatest time for a newlywed couple. Sipping margaritas by the ocean, ordering room service and spending as much alone time as possible. In "The Heartbreak Kid," a freshly married couple goes to Mexico to start their honeymoon, but everything goes downhill starting on the drive to the destination.
Ben Stiller plays Eddie, a 40-something bachelor who owns a sporting goods store in San Francisco. He seems to be in a bit of a rut romantically until he meets Lila, played by Malin Akerman. Lila later finds where Eddie works, and the two begin dating. Jerry Stiller plays Eddie’s father, and pushes his son into finally tying the knot and moving forward with his new and more established wife. Jerry Stiller is always good for a few laughs, and is obviously a good match to play Eddie’s father in the film.
After the wedding, Eddie and Lila head to Mexico in his small convertible. After hours of listening to non-stop off-key singing by his new bride, the two stop to have a little afternoon delight before they reach Mexico. After an extremely awkward sex scene, the two continue on their journey. Ben Stiller is great to watch in most situations, but in a scene like this it is just uncomfortable.
After getting severely sunburned the first day of the trip, Lila is subjected to staying in the suite while Eddie explores the resort alone. During his time apart from his new bride, Eddie comes across an eclectic family, including his new love interest. Michelle Monaghan plays Miranda, who invites Eddie to spend time with her family during their vacation. Since no one realizes Eddie is actually on his honeymoon, they all find something loveable about their new friend.
Carlos Mencia makes an appearance as Tito, a hotel worker who does whatever he can to make the guests happy. His role is one of the most enjoyable parts of the movie, and it would have been better if it had more scenes with the comedian.
Once Lila and Miranda realize what is happening, Miranda wants nothing to do with Eddie, and his marriage also ends. Eddie returns to San Francisco, and loses his business to his ex-wife. With counseling from his father, Eddie does his best to get Miranda back.
By the end of the movie, most of the humorous scenes have ended. Once Eddie finds Miranda it seems like the movie will just never end. Had a few scenes throughout the film been cut, it may not have seemed so drawn out.
Overall, this is a movie with a lot of laughs, but not a movie that will have you talking about the funny parts once it is over. Ben Stiller seems to be in a lot of movies where he gets himself deeper into trouble as the plot continues, and after seeing so many of these films this is nothing new. Malin Akerman was actually very entertaining in her role, and made the movie worthwhile. As long as your expectations aren’t extremely high, this movie will satisfy your comedic cravings for time being.
