Anvil! The Story of Anvil
A documentary about a Canadian band will have you rooting for the underdog
If you’re a big metal fan, you might have heard of the band Anvil. If not, well, you probably haven’t. Created by high school friends Robb Reiner and Steve “Lips” Kudlow, the Canadian band’s second album, 1982’s “Metal on Metal,” is known for being extremely influential in the metal world.
Major bands like Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax count Anvil as their musical influences. So why hasn’t Anvil achieved the same level of success? That is, in a word, complicated.
“Anvil! The Story of Anvil” is a documentary by Sacha Gervasi that chronicles the band’s continuous struggle to make it big. The film, which features footage from the band’s previous successes and their more recent disappointments, as well as personal interviews with Reiner, Kudlow and their families.
From a European tour that didn’t go quite as expected to the making of their album “This is Thirteen,” Gervasi takes viewers deep into the story of Anvil, both past and present. Most importantly, he shows Kudlow and Reiner as they truly are, and they turn out to be people that you find yourself rooting for throughout the whole film.
“Anvil!” is a film that shows humor, disappointment, passion and, most importantly, heart. Don’t miss it.
