If you’re in the mood for a gripping ride, “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3” is the movie for you. Based on the 1974 classic, this film takes place in today’s time, placing its own modern twist on the original. Nonetheless, it is a spellbinding thriller that will keep you at the edge of your seat from start to finish.
Directed by Tony Scott, “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3” revolves around four men with weapons who hijack a New York City subway train and demand a large sum of money to be delivered in one hour. Until they receive their money, they will hold the passengers on the train hostage. A detective of the New York City Transit Police attempts to negotiate with the hijackers to avert any killing, while simultaneously tracking down the identities of the four men. Though the detective uses his knowledge of the subway system to defeat the four men, the passengers, who are trapped ungerground, will be unable to escape.
The 1974 version starred actors such as Walter Mathtau and Robert Shaw. The Tony Scott remake also features a star cast, including Denzel Washington as Walter Garber, John Travolta, who plays the role of Ryder, Luis Guzman as Phil Ramos, Victor Gojcaj as Bashkim and John Turturro as Camonetti.
Washington and Travolta both gave a compelling performance, while keeping the audience enthralled. There couldn’t have been anyone better than Travolta to play the leader of the four armed men.
While the majority of the film is action packed the comedic one-liners add comic relief to a script brimming with tension.
All-in-all, Scott, who directed films such as “Déjà vu,” “Man on Fire” and “Crimson Tide” has created another hit.
