The Princess Diaries
Mia Thermopolis is a 15-year-old girl living in San Francisco with her single mother. She is a geeky teenager who does not fit in at school and whose best friend, Lily, is an offbeat character. Lily's brother, Michael, is Mia's other best friend who has a secret crush on the nerdy yet lovable Mia.
Mia's father did not take part in her upbringing; he was living in his home country of (a fictional European) Genovia, preparing to assume his role as king of the country. Mia, however, did not know that her father was of royal blood, nor has she ever met his mother, her grandmother, the Queen of Genovia.
Shortly before her 16th birthday, Mia's father dies in an accident and his mother ventures to San Francisco to tell Mia that she is more than a normal high school student; she is a princess and next in line to the Genovian throne.
Mia agrees to attend princess lessons and then make a decision that she will announce at a grand ball at a later date about whether or not she will accept royal duties. She only agrees to learn about how to become a princess because her mother and grandmother promised that it would be kept secret.
After Mia gets a makeover and is transformed from an ugly duckling into a swan princess, however, Lily believes that something strange is going on in Mia's life and wants to know what is going on. Mia tells Lily about her new royalty, and soon after her confession to Lily, the press arrives at her school, pressuring her to give interviews.
Lily is not responsible for the paparazzi overload, but Mia's secret is out nonetheless. After being the invisible girl for so long, Mia is caught between her desire to flee responsibility as well as her position in the spotlight and her desire to snag the school's hottest boy.
"The Princess Diaries" is a movie that traces Mia's development from a shy, unconfident girl, who didn't know quite what she wanted out of life, into a confident woman, who makes her own choices without looking back. But will she accept the crown? And which boy will she ultimately choose to accompany her at the ball: the school hottie or her best friend's brother? Follow Mia's journey as she fights to overcome the awkwardness of adolescence while simultaneously managing her new identity as a royal and sole heir to the Genovian throne.
