Originally aired in September 2005, "How I Met Your Mother" gained a large following of fans. If you haven't had the privilege of watching the show yet, renting season one on DVD will give you a nice background to the characters and the story lines.
The show's pilot begins in the year 2030 with narrator, Bob Saget, talking to his kids about how he met their mother. The narrator is the main character, Ted, in the future, but younger Ted is played by Josh Radnor. He goes back and starts in the year 2005 when his quest for finding a wife began.
Ted Mosby is an architect living in New York City with his best friends. It seems a little cliche for a sitcom, but the show's writers do a good job of switching things up a bit. Ted lives with his best friend and future lawyer, Marshall, who is played by the hilarious Jason Segal. Marshall is engaged to Lily, the school teacher, played by Alyson Hannigan, and the three share an apartment.
Barney Stinson, brilliantly played by Neil Patrick Harris, is a mutual friend who always seems to get the gang into a lot of trouble. Barney is a womanizer who constantly tells his tales of female conquests, making his friends uncomfortable, but ultimately creating some interesting plots for the show.
Ted immediately falls for a news anchor, Robin Scherbatsky, and does his best to get her out on a date. Robin, played by Cobie Smulders, is Canadian and creates a lot of humor because of her cultural differences.
After their first date, Ted tells Robin he loves her, causing her to be extremely cautious of dating him. Most of the first season is spent building up to the relationship the two eventually share, but it reminds the viewer a lot of the "Ross and Rachel" scenario from "Friends."
The show does an excellent job of providing flashbacks. Whether something happened years ago when Ted and Marshall met in college, or just a few minutes before a current situation, the flashbacks are the best part of this show. Hearing the stories of how every member of the group met is also a treat when you begin watching the show.
The DVD comes with a lot of special features and commentary, so this will keep you entertained for a few more hours after you watch all of the episodes. There are just over 20 different episodes, all at half an hour each, so it's a good way to spend a long weekend on the couch.
If you are already a fan of the show, it's also fun to re-watch the first season so you can reminisce over your favorite episodes. The show will enter season five this fall, so make sure to rent the other season DVDs if you want the full experience.
