Cheri
While some of the appealing films out this summer have consisted of explosions, colossal rival robots, a museum full of statues that come to life, and an animated house tied with thousands of helium balloons that flies off for an adventure, “Cheri” will provide you with something refreshing and different. Director of “The Queen” and “High Fidelity,” Stephen Frears has created another hit.
Frears’s “Cheri” is based on Collette’s two novels, “Cheri” and “La fin de Cheri.” This romantic drama tells the story of 1920 Paris, where the courtesan, Lea de Lonval, has avoided falling in love throughout her career. Cheri, the 19-year-old son of the retired courtesan, Madame Peloux, asks Lea to take Cheri to bed. Though their relationship lasts years, it is only after Cheri gets married that the two discover their love for one another. With this new conflict arising, the mollycoddled Cheri chooses to live in a fantasy, believing he can have a wife and a mistress.
The film stars Michelle Pfeiffer, who plays the role of Lea de Lonval, Rupert Friend as Cheri, Kathy Bates as his mother, Madame Peloux, Felicity Jones as Edmee, Frances Tomelty as Rose, Harriet Walter as La Loupiote, and Anita Pallenberg as La Copine.
With a blend of outstanding acting, engaging direction, a clever script, and beautiful costume design, this is a must-see film. Screenplay writer Christopher Hampton has created an intelligent masterpiece. The gorgeous costumes are alone enough to spend the money to see this elegantly made film.
Michelle Pfeiffer delivers an excellent performance in this film. She is wonderful and convincing in every way from start to finish. If the costumes and exquisite scenery don’t please your eye, then the beautiful Pfeiffer will do it. This movie will not disappoint you.
