Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood
If you're looking for a funny mother-daughter flick that will also touch you,
If you’re looking for the perfect film for you and your best girl friends to watch, this is it. “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood” is a spirited flick that will make you laugh and cry, all at the same time. While the mother-daughter drama has been overdone, this film will deeply touch you.
This dramedy is based on two Rebecca Well novels called “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood” and “Little Altars Everywhere.”
The “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood” tells the story of Sidalee Walker, a well-renowned New York playwright who is quoted in an interview with Time magazine, stating that her unhappy, messy childhood is what gives her writing material. After this quote infuriates her mother, a fight ensues between mother and daughter. The mother’s friends intervene and kidnap Sidalee, taking her to a lodge where they hope to explain her mother’s past and resolve any conflict between the two.
Directed by Callie Khouri, this film stars Sandra Bullock as Sidalee Walker, Ellen Burstyn as her mother, Viviane Joan Abbott Walker, Fionnula Flanagan as Teensy Whitman, James Garner as Shepard “Shep” Walker, Cherry Jones as Grandma Abbott, Ashley Judd as the younger Viviane Abbott, Shirley Knight as Necie Kelleher, Angus Macfayden as Connor McGill, and Maggie Smith as Caro Bennett.
Writer of the screenplay Mark Andrus has created a funny, clever script. The acting and the script have character. Ellen Burstyn and Ashley Judd deliver Andrus’s lines in an excellent performance as Viviane.
While the film jumps back and forth in time, the story is extremely clear and well-directed.
For any daughter who’s ever been frustrated with their mother, you will be pleasantly surprised by this movie.
