The Last Dragon
An '80s cult classic.
It is funny that most people have never actually heard of this movie. “The Last Dragon” is what many would consider a cult classic. It got a lot of media attention during its release in 1985 because of the musical star presence in the movie, but nowadays, most people do not even remember it. This was a Berry Gordy film that was directed by Michael Schultz. The film starred Taimak, the '80s singer Vanity, and Julius Carry. The film is about a young black martial arts student and teacher named Leroy Green. Leroy was in training to become an ultimate marital arts master in which he would be able to compare to his idol, Bruce Lee. By becoming a master, he would be able to possess what is known as “The Glow,” which is the final level that anyone could achieve. He is known to many in the Harlem area as Bruce Leroy because of his skills. This draws some jealous attention from a rival who believes he is a better fighter than Leroy. Leroy is challenged by a fighter named Sho’nuff who threatens his family in order to draw him into a battle.
This is not your typical martial arts movie. It is actually very hilarious and has a great soundtrack which includes a song from Stevie Wonder. The movie itself seems like a soundtrack, especially since the character, Laura Charles, which is played by the singer, Vanity, is the host of a television dance show similar to “Soul Train.” This is one of those classics that you have to see, especially since the lead actor who played Leroy Green, Taimak, is actually a martial artist black belt.
