If you're looking for a funny, romantic, film with beautiful direction and acting, "Monsoon Wedding" is the movie for you. If that's not enough of a treat for you, then the music will do it.
Directed by Mira Nair, "Monsoon Wedding" tells the story of an anxious father of the bride-to-be. The bulk of the film is set inside the home of a Punjabi family from New Delhi who has been brought together for Aditi's arranged marriage. She is marrying a man from the United States. Therefore, after marriage, Aditi will leave her family's home to go reside in the U.S. with a husband she barely knows. While this poses enough of a problem, Aditi also still has feelings for her old boss who continues to bring Aditi's hopes up of leaving his wife, but doesn't. Out of her whole family, Aditi's sister, Ria, is the only one who is able to recognize Aditi's unhappiness and wrong reasons for marrying.
Ria has her own story that unfolds within the film. She wishes to move to the United States and pursue her dream of becoming a writer. However, her family refuses to allow her to leave because they have their own plans for her, to follow the more traditional, family path.
This all occurs while the wedding planner named P. K. Dubey is falling for the maid, Alice.
The film stars Naseeruddin Shah, who plays the role of Lalit Verma, Lillete Dubey as Pimmi Verma, Vasundhara Das as Aditi Verma, Parveen Dabaas as Hemant Rai, Shefali Shetty as Ria Verma, and Tillotama Shome as Alice.
The dialogue is brilliantly written to make you laugh and make you cry. The story itself is full of meaning and goes beyond the surface of the words and conversations themselves. This film will tap into your intellectual side and raise questions about family, trust, love, abuse, tradition, and culture.
This film is so colorful and festive that it truly brings it to life.
"Monsoon Wedding" is a must-see film that will be sure to have you laughing, crying, and feeling truly satisfied.
